Year Round skiing in Virginia - August 2009

August wouldn't come to mind as the right time of year for skiing, unless you were headed to South America. But a year-round ski facility called the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre is scheduled to open in Lynchburg, Va, at Liberty University on Aug. 29.

Its slopes will be layered with a synthetic material that simulates snow for skiing, boarders and tubing. Snowflex will be open to the public as well as to students. The facility will include a main slope, two grind rails, an 11-foot-high quarter pipe, and a beginner slope. Equipment rentals will be available.

Clothing & Accessories for Winter Survival!

If you've had the joy of experiencing the recent heavy fall of snow across the UK, you'll understand the need to keep a supply of warm winter clothing for such unexpected weather conditions.

Here's a list of the basics to ensure you're kept warm during this cold spell

Layering is an important concept to understand

Instead of wearing one heavy jacket, wear layers so you can peel them off when you get warm and start generating sweat. You'll keep moisture from building up. Moisture, or sweat, will contribute to you being cold.

Here are some tips for dressing, whether you're going sledding for a few hours or on a backcountry trek:

Socks: Wool is best. For extra warmth you can start with a pair of light synthetic or silk socks covered with wool socks.

Footwear: Snow boots or heavy-duty, waterproof hiking boots.

First layer: Silk, synthetic or light wool thermals.

Mid-layer: Synthetic fleece (not cotton fleece), or wool sweaters make good insulating layers.

Outer bottom layer: Ski pants or wool pants.

Outer top layer: A ski jacket or wind and waterproof shell jacket is a must for the outer layer.

Gloves: Ski or snowboard gloves or wool mittens work well.

Head gear: Hats are easy. Any ski or snowboard hat works well. Also, make sure you put your safety first if you're heading for the slopes and purchase a ski helmet.

Ski death provokes helmet debate

The death of a woman in a highly publicised skiing collision has shaken holidaymakers and sparked debate about safety on the piste.

There has been plenty of early snow in the Alps and the ski season is in full swing. But in Kitzbuehel, the news of a fatal skiing accident has overshadowed the usual frivolous atmosphere at this time of year. People in Germany and Austria have been shocked by the recent ski accident involving a senior German politician, Dieter Althaus, and it has triggered a debate about wearing helmets.

In the accident, which happened on New Year's Day, a Slovak woman was killed and Mr Althaus, the governor of the eastern German state of Thuringia, was seriously injured when they collided while skiing. Mr Althaus, 50, was flown by helicopter to hospital in Schwarzach and he was placed in an artificially-induced coma. According to surgeons, he suffered injuries to the skull and brain. Neurologists said it was likely that the helmet that he was wearing saved his life.

Beata Christandl, a 41-year-old mother-of-four, was not wearing a helmet. She died on the way to hospital after suffering from multiple skull injuries. The accident happened at a junction of two pistes in the Riesneralm ski resort in Austria.

According to reports in the German media Mr Althaus was skiing on a red, intermediate, slope which crosses an easier slope, on which Beata Christandl was travelling. One investigator said both skiers were travelling at around 50km/h (30 mph).

Josef Schmid, a spokesman for the Austrian skiing federation, urged all those on the slopes to err on the side of caution. "We recommend that all skiers should wear helmets, it's not just young children, adults also need protection," Mr Schmid said.

"With the new carving skis, people tend to ski faster these days and they overestimate their own abilities. The slopes are very busy and it's much safer for everyone if you wear a helmet," he said. Politicians and leading figures in sport have called for the wearing of helmets to be made compulsory for skiers and snowboarders in Germany and Austria. In Italy, it is compulsory for all children under the age of 14 to wear a helmet on the ski slopes. And the idea has support from among skiing's elite." A helmet would help to reduce the severity of injuries," said Hilde Gerg, the 33-year-old German Olympic slalom champion, who has now retired from professional skiing, in an interview with Bunte magazine.

MP3 player saves lost skiers

A skier and a boarder were saved by the light of an mp3 player after they got lost in the Swiss Alps.

The 22-year-old men got lost after setting off from the resort of Savognin, in south east Switzerland on Friday. They were suffering from mild hypothermia as they has to endure overnight temperatures of -15C.

They were able to alert the authorities using a mobile phone, but it when it ran out of battery power all they had left was an MP3 player, which the snowboarder had been using to listen to music.

Airborne rescuers were eventually able to reach the pair high on a wooded slope after being guided by the light of the digital music player.

Blizzard batters parts of the Alps

Extremely heavy snowfall forced Val d’Isère, Saas Fee and Alagna to temporarily close on Monday, whilst Tignes only managed to open 2 lifts due to the extreme weather.

The weekend skiing in France was fantastic with largely sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday combined fresh powder off-piste. However Monday wa a completely different story in the Espace Killy. A metre of snow had fallen since Sunday morning and was still coming down hard on Monday. Tignes only managed to open two lifts on Monday morning, including one drag lift on the beginner slopes and the Tichot chair from Val Claret.

It was a similar story in the northern Italian Alps, close to the French and Swiss borders, where it has been snowing extremely heavily. Alagna has received 100cm of snow since Sunday morning and all the lifts were shut on Monday due to huge amounts of fresh snow.

Zermatt and Saas Fee both got lots of snow on Monday, and Saas Fee had to temporarily close as a result of the high winds and heavy snow, but conditions should be fantastic when they re-open.

Elsewhere in the Alps, the sun has been getting through and resorts in the Southern Dolomites enjoyed a bright weekend.

The outlook is for large snowfalls in the south western Alps. Austrian resorts are expecting between 10cm and 30cm of snow for the week ahead, and Isola 2000 in France was expecting 15cm on Monday and 22cm on Tuesday.

The eastern side of the Alps isn’t expecting anywhere near as much snow, but temperatures are forecast to be low so the snow will stay in great condition.

Lifts stopped by cold in Canada

Low temperatures in Calgary, Alberta, led to the region’s Olympic Park ski area shutting down on Friday because the weather was too cold for the lifts to operate within required limits.

An Arctic Storm brought temperatures down to -27C during the daytime on Friday with wind chill below -40C. The cold weather is expected to continue for several more days and may bring actual temperatures as low as -40C. The cold weather has been accompanied by strong winds of up to 41mph.

Canada Olympic Park cancelled all outdoor activities, but park spokesman Stewart McDonough told local media that it was rare for the park to shut down due to bad weather. However the lifts should not operate in strong winds or very low temperatures. The forecast high at present is about -31C.

Spanish resorts benefit from early snow

Sierra Nevada and Formigal both opened their doors last weekend and Baqueria Beret is opening on the 22nd November.
Over 7000 skiers and boarders took to the slopes at the Sierra Nevada resort near Granada last weekend, a week ahead of the planned opening date. It was the first time the resort has opened early for 20 years, thanks to heavy snowfall the previous weekend and currently has over 33km of pistes open.The resort is one of 15 new ski resorts added by Crystal for the 2008/2009 ski season which also includes Formigal, which opened on 15th November for weekend skiing. The resort will re-open on 22nd November. Formigal is Spain’s largest resort, recently expanded into four valleys and new direct flights to Huesca have cut the transfer time to just over one hour.

Snow Report

AUT: Last week's fresh snow has boosted snow conditions across Austria.
FRA: Tignes benefited from 30cm of fresh snow last week, doubling the snow depth. Cold weather is helping to maintain the great snow conditions.
SWI: Saas Fee and Zermatt are both open for skiing and expect more fresh snow on Tuesday.
ITA: Val Senales received 50cm of fresh snow last week. Light snow is forecast until Friday.
SCO: The Lecht is open for snowsports. Although this week is milder than last week, the temperature is expected to drop again on Friday.
USA: More resorts are opening for winter skiing; Killington opened over the weekend and Mammoth opened on Monday.
CAN: Sunshine Village is scheduled to kick off the Canadian season this week, opening on Friday.

Vail Resorts ban Burton Love Boards

Six ski resorts are joining in the protest over Burton's two controversial new snowboards, which feature images of Playboy models.
Smugglers' Notch in Vermont says it has banned employees from using the Love and Primo boards made by Burton Snowboards. Vail Resorts has prohibited employees of its Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Keystone resorts in Colorado and California's Heavenly Mountain from using the Love boards or any other inappropriate, offensive or suggestive equipment while on duty. The boards also led to a demonstration last week outside Burton's headquarters in Burlington, Vermont.
Burton CEO Laurent Potdevin says the company supports freedom of artistic expression and stands by the boards.
